1. по совести жить, поступать и т.п. [adv or, less often, subj-compl with copula (subj: abstr)]

⇒ (to live, act etc) in an upstanding manner, the way one should:

- according to one's conscience;

- honest(ly);

- decent(ly);

- conscientious(ly);

- in good conscience;

- honorable (honorably).

     ♦ "Я рад за вас - вы поступили по совести" (Гроссман 2). "I'm glad for you-you've acted according to your conscience" (2a).

     ♦ ...Надо отдать должное Варваре: честно, по совести вела она хлебные дела все эти трудные годы (Абрамов 1). ...You had to give Varvara her due. throughout all those difficult years she had managed the grain supplies honestly and conscientiously (1a).

     ♦ Председатель начал было с того, что он [Иван Федорович] свидетель без присяги, что он может показывать или умолчать, но что, конечно, все показанное должно быть по совести, и т. д., и т. д. (Достоевский 2). The presiding judge began by saying that he [Ivan Fyodorovich] was not under oath, that he could give evidence or withhold it, but that, of course, all testimony should be given in good conscience, etc., etc. (2a).

     ♦ А может, Лизка и права, подумал вдруг Михаил. Может, и надо было спасибо сказать. Ведь всё-таки, ежели рассудить по совести, заслужила (Абрамов 1). [context transl] Maybe Lizka was right, Mikhail suddenly thought. Maybe they should have thanked her. After all, to be fair, she did deserve it (1a).

2. по совести сказать, признаться и т.п. coll. Also: ПО ЧИСТОЙ СОВЕСТИ coll [adv]

⇒ (to say, admit etc sth.) sincerely, openly:

- (tell (say etc) sth.) in all honesty;

- (tell (admit etc) sth.) honestly (truthfully, frankly);

- be (quite) frank;

- (tell) the truth.

     ♦ [Соня:] Скажи мне по совести, как друг... Ты счастлива? (Чехов 3). [S.:] Tell me in all honesty, as a friend-are you happy? (3b).

     ♦ "Скажи по совести, Илья: как давно с тобой не случалось этого?" (Гончаров 1). "Tell me honestly, Ilya, how long is it since such a thing has happened to you?" (1b).

     ♦ [Маша:] Я вам по совести: если бы он [Константин] ранил себя серьёзно, то я не стала бы жить ни одной минуты (Чехов 6). [М.:] I'll be quite frank with you; if he [Konstantin] had hurt himself badly, I wouldn't have gone on living another minute (6b).

     ♦ "Ты нам всё по совести рассказывай!" - "Мы тут в потёмках блукаем [Ukrainian = блуждаем]" (Шолохов 3). "Tell us the truth." "We're all in the dark here" (3b).

⇒ speaking openly, if one is to speak honestly:

- in (all) conscience;

- in all honesty (sincerity);

- frankly (speaking);

- to be truthful;

- to be (quite) frank (honest);

- to tell (you) the truth.

     ♦ "Всю эту психологию мы совсем уничтожим, все подозрения на вас в ничто обращу, так что ваше преступление вроде помрачения какого-то представится, потому, по совести, оно помрачение и есть" (Достоевский 3).
